Keeping it real

fpi_coffecup.jpg A new apartment! A new high-speed Internet connection! A spare room for guests! Already filled with books!

So I brought eight bookcases via the F train to the new place. Due to the local topography of subway stops, that was two flights of stairs up to the subway -- yes, up; it's an elevated train at that part of its run -- then two flights of stairs out of the subway, and then three more flights to the fourth floor, using the American numbering.

Seven were pine, one was oak. A Brooklyn guy on one of the runs asked me what was up with the bookcase. I said I was moving. "You been doing that all day?" I nodded. He was bemused. "That's keeping it real."

(Note to self: next time, renew your driver's license before the move.)

I am thinking dinner party.

You moved by subway. I really have no words, except for maybe, damn, that's impressive.

Cool! Does that mean there's room for all of us to visit?

It's like I always say; it doesn't matter what the question is, the answer is light rail.

FYI, since we had discussed this previously, I thought you might find this interesting. Some other folks, too, given that PML is normally not associated with taking exotic anti-MS drugs:

Carrie, I will *make* room if need be. But at this point, I think Krewson has more books. Which, as he said, just ain't right.

And I got the Civil War print up! The capture of Roanoke Island by a charge of Zouaves! (Hawkins' Zouaves, the 9th New York Volunteers.) It's not the Harper's Weekly one either. Brave men, generous in victory... but what silly uniforms!

Wow! I am impressed.

As for Bernard's comment:

I await the in vivo studies with great interest. At least 10 of my patients would sign whatever forms they are offered if they could get that exotic MS drug.

He did *not* move entirely by subway. He did have a grocery cart, and it was only twelve blocks from the storage facility. In high-humidity 25C-30C heat.

The cart wasn't used for the cases, though, or the table or the chairs. Worked for the CDs and clothes.

On the other hand, a special Halfway down the Danubian round of applause to the NYC Math Teacher, for his hard work with the actual contents of the bookcases (and his car).

Congratulations on the move, and here's to a good long stay.

Zouaves, hussars, those culottes the legionaries used to wear sometimes, the bearskin, woad, samurai helmets: the soldierly propensity for dressing up silly still amazes me. Zouaves have to be the worst though (for some reason highlanders aren't, possibly because from earliest youth I associated them with Remembrance day).
