Only in Europe, an entire parking lot covered in acorns could be... empty of squirrels.
We do have squirrels in Europe, of course. But they are smaller, a lot fewer in number, red instead of gray, and very, very shy. I see them around my parents' house all the time, where they like to steal our harvest of hazelnuts. Why none of them would hang around this parking lot on the banks of Snagov lake, where acorns are literally strewn about, I can't say. It sure looked like squirrel heaven.
Posted by claudia at September 25, 2004 08:20 PMJust yesterday, I was sitting on a bench in DC when a big brown squirrel with a very puffy tail walked right up to me and sat down at my feet. He clearly wanted food SOOO, being that I had a hotdog (fresh from the vendors on K ST!) I offered a piece of the bun which was accepted. Next, I offered a piece of hotdog (minus the mustard and onion). It was NOT accepted. I'm not sure who is smarter, me or the squirrel! :-)

Dear Claudia and Douglas,
This seems as good a post as any on which to offer my condolences. I am so very sorry for the loss of your son. My instinct is to add to this (as it seems so inadequate) but I do not believe there is anything else to say, so please at least be assured of my utter sincerity. I am so very very sorry.
I had the pleasure of reading this entire blog backwards over the weekend and after the initial shock of sur-reality, I eventually worked out that there are three different people writing here. I quickly developed quite an affection for all of you, though I initially mourned the loss of my imagined Balkan expert-weird pie making- brilliant writer-mother of toddlers.
So just a note to tell you I enjoy this site tremendously. And thank you. And, again, I am so sorry.
