I've joined the team over at tacitus. I won't be blogging there every day, but I expect to post at least occasionally.
It's a much bigger and busier blog than this one, so it'll be an interesting new experience. We hope.
Posted by douglas at March 12, 2004 05:51 PMSo I've given your Blog two days of reading and I can say that I've really enjoyed it. I have been searching for several months now for Blogs that relate the everyday experiences of life in Romania. I think I found you guys from a link off a Blog off another Blog on weblog.ro.
It has been interesting reading your observations about life in Buch. I am also glad to see that you have managed to venture outside of Buch and enjoy the other regions of RO.
I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer from 1998-2000 in Negresti Vaslui. As I'm sure you know, judet Vaslui is pretty poor and Negresti was, or is still, listed as the poorest city in RO. (City being a community around 10,000). I was the first volunteer and the last one sent there. PC determined that the community could not support a volunteer. During the summer of 1999, water was turned off for about 4 weeks. We often ran out of bread and the meat situation was...well...you can imagine.
Anyway, I loved my time there and I still love that poor town/village. I married one of it's (most beautiful) citizens and she and I make a trip back about once every year. Negresti actually changed quite a bit over the past 4 years. They have a bakery and managed to redecorate the most popular Bar. (the village has 38 bars...and yes I counted them all...it took a 10 minute walk around town. Gimmie a break, I was a PC vol. looking to keep busy.)
I encourage you to visit the North East of Romania. Easter is approaching and the services at Voronet are wonderful. I wouldn't drive. The 500 train line will shoot you right up to Vaslui, and from there you can get to Suceava. Just don't buy Beer or seeds from Mihai when he boards the train in Focsani. And under no circumstances should you try smoking a Carpati. Be afraid...be very afraid.
Bafta! And I'll be looking forward to more stories.

Oh, man, Doug. Do they need you there. That "magnificently wordsmithed" post about the "intermingled", yeesh. Show 'em what a man in command of his writing style can do. Maybe in the process you can de-vitrify Tac.
