ABEPSF

Summary: Aberrated optics diffraction point spread fcns
License: Freeware
Author: Nelson Wallace
Email: user702495@aol.com
Homepage: http://home.earthlink.net/~nwwallace/
Download: abepsf23.zip (Oct 31 1998, 108.3K)
Description:
Abe_PSF2, Version 3, is a 32-bit Windows PC program that shows how the
wavefront shape and the transmission function of an optical system will
affect its image blur, formally called the point spread function (PSF).
The image degradation from wavefront effects such as third order
aberrations (coma, spherical, astigmatism) and defocus, Zernike
polynomial coefficients, discontinuous phase errors (waffle,
checkerboard, or random), and/or a subaperture phase plate are
simulated. The blur growth from the transmission losses due to
obscurations from secondary mirror struts or a central obscuration are
modeled, as well as apodization effects or speckle. The pupil can be
round, hexagonal, or rectangular, and the system wavelength and f/number
are user selectable. All effects may be simulated independently or in
combination.

Screen output is in tabular or graphical form; 2-D or 3-D plots of PSF
or logarithm PSF (to show low intensity detail) are possible. An ASCII
file containing pupil transmission, pupil phase, or PSF modulus values
can be saved and imported into other programs. The graphical user
interface is intuitive and straightforward. This program should be of
interest to high school or college teachers or students who are
interested in science, optics or astronomy, as well as optics
professionals.

License: Freeware
Author: Juan M. Aguirregabiria, Department of Theoretical
Email: wtpagagj@lg.ehu.es
Homepage: http://tp.lc.ehu.es/jma.html
Download: ds32101.zip (Jul 9 1999, 3.4M)
Description:
Dynamics Solver is intended to solve initial and boundary-value problems
for continuous and discrete dynamical systems:
- Single ordinary differential equations of arbitrary order, including
stiff problems,
- Systems of any number of first-order ordinary differential equations,
- A rather large class of functional-differential equations and
systems,
- Iterated maps and recurrences in arbitrary dimensions,
- Any problem that can be written in one of the aforementioned forms.

No programming is necessary: everything can be entered in user-friendly
dialog boxes and complex graphics (and numerical) results can be easily
and quickly obtained. The program has a powerful built-in compiler that
automatically translates a large class of mathematical expressions
written in a standard format into an internal code that can be executed
very fast. Apart from the dynamical system solution, one can compute
any quantity involving the solution and its derivatives (for one or more
values of the independent variables), the problem parameters and the
initial conditions. For example, it is possible to draw phase-space
portraits (including an optional direction field), Poincari maps,
Liapunov exponents, cobweb diagrams, histograms and bifurcation
diagrams. The results can be projected (in perspective or not) along
any direction and particular subspaces of the phase space (or the space
of initial conditions) may be analyzed easily.

Email: vzajic@mail.bnl.gov
Homepage: http://vzajic.tripod.com/Shareware.html
Download: let110.zip (Sep 26 2000, 255.9K)
Description:
The ongoing miniaturization electronic devices is accompanied by a
constant reduction of the critical charge capable of changing logic
state in the device. As a consequence, these devices are increasingly
susceptible to soft and hard errors caused by a single heavy ion
passing through sensitive volume of the device. Such errors are called
single event upsets (SEU). The upset probability depends on the linear
energy transfer (LET) of the heavy ion projectile. Heavy ion beams
suitable for SEU testing are obtained at facilities attached to low
energy heavy ion accelerators. The beam energy is determined by the
accelerator operational parameters and beamline optics, and then is
used to calculate the LET value, usually by using the semi-empirical
formulas developed by J. F. Ziegler. For a given heavy ion energy,
LET, or range, the Energy-LET-Range calculator calculates the remaining
two parameters. Target materials can be added with a simple material
editor.

Full search facilities are on hand for those occasions when the answer
to that question is on the tip of your tongue but just won't come, and a
single mouse click on any object in the display will bring up
information panels to help you fix its name and designation in your
mind.

Stella 2000

Version: 5.0
Summary: Complete Astronomy Suite
License: Shareware
Homepage: http://www.coeli.com/
Download: astel500.zip (Dec 1 2000, 4M)
Description:
Stella 2000 v5.0 is a complete astronomy suite - with realistic
planetarium, observing log and list builder, live ephemeris, location
browser, animations, and sophisticated searches embracing planets,
comets, DSOs, and over 300,000 stars. Planetarium effects include
scintillation, refraction, and precession in point-source, photo plate,
and spotlight display styles, along with the complete Messier catalog
in image icons. An integrated HTML guide to the Solar System and an
Astronomical Dictionary of over 1,000 terms form part of Stella's
standard feature set.

New with v5.0 comes complete integration of Microsoft Agent speech
technology, so that animated characters can guide you painlessly
through the pronunciation of a myriad of arcane star names and lore,
and even read aloud from Stella's integral reference works, not to
mention offering that most immediate form of program help: spoken
guidance. Stella also brings you Aspects of Astronomy, the
book-length primer covering topics such as: "What are the Stars?",
"Choosing a Telescope", "Cosmology", "Dark Matter", "Eclipses",
"The History of Astronomy", and dozens of others.

Other notable features are a special context menu through which you
can add your own permanent observations to data displayed in Stella's
Report window, and Coeli Time Line (a.k.a. Stella BC), an interactive
adjustment of the sky through past and future millennia. With Time
Line's slider bar, you can view the precession of the local sky live,
from before the building of the Pyramids to mankind's distant future.

With Drag Mode, complete plasticity is introduced into all your
interactions with the planetarium display. Dragging the mouse
auto-scrolls sky quadrants smoothly and quickly into view, just as
if you were turning your head or slewing your scope. And this version
takes the Interactive Sky even further by introducing Auto-search: just
roll the mouse over any object in Stella's display for instant updates,

Author: Rasto Snoj
Email: rasto.snoj@guest.arnes.si
Download: uklon099.zip (Jan 25 1999, 475.7K)
Description:
UKLON099 is an educational computer software in the field of physics of
light - wave phenomena - for both teachers and students (high school
level up to university).

You can observe photorealistic Fraunhofer diffraction patterns on three
different shapes of apertures. It is possible to change the size, the
position and the number of the apertures in two perpendicular directions
on a big opaque screen. You can also change the color of incoming light
and the time of exposure.

Also you can explain to your students something about the photoeffect or
wave properties of particles passing through different apertures if you
choose so called dot type of pattern.

On the advanced level you can study intensity distribution, form factor
and grating factor (interference factor) at various intersections
through diffraction pattern.

Diffraction patterns can be saved or loaded in 'internal data type' BPE
or standard Windows BMP format.

Windows help and 'sound' help option are supported. Wave files (some
simple sounds) are included just to allow user to make his own
meaningfull sound remarks.

WinAnts v1.0g - An Artificial Life program. This program is based on a
description of Ant Cellular Automata published in Scientific American,
July 1994. Each Ant follows a simple set of rules, but complex behavior
emerges from that system.

The Rules: Imagine the pixels on your screen are like squares on a chess
board. An Ant is on a square facing in a random direction. It moves to
the square in front of it. If the square is black, it changes it color
and turns 90 degrees left. If the square is color, it changes it black
and turns 90 degrees right. This is a new program version with added
features.
