Help to Text

Summary: Converts .HLP files to Text
License: Shareware
Author: Alex Freiman
Email: alexc@concentric.net
Download: hlp2tx21.zip (Dec 6 1999, 890.5K)
Description:
Help to Text is a program that converts Windows .HLP files into editable
ASCII text files. There are many reasons why this program is helpful to
Windows users. Here are two of them:

1. The current trend in Windows software is to give minimal paper
documentation with a product. Documentation is mostly put into online
help in a .HLP file. Help to Text will convert these .HLP files into
text files. You can then edit and print them, and you will have your
own reference copy of the program's documentation.

2. Many times I've found a Help file's keyword search frustrating. I'm
much more familiar with how to use my Word processor or editor for
searching. With Help to Text I can convert the help file into a text
file and bring it into my favorite editor to do any kind of search I
want.

HELPDC

Version: 2.1
Summary: Windows 3.x/95 HLP/MVB Decompiler v2.1
License: Freeware. Upload by author
Email: 100326.2776@CompuServe.COM
Download: helpdc21.zip (Feb 3 1997, 217K)
Description:
HELPDECO will recreate all source files (RTF, HPJ, MVP, BMP, WMF, SHG, MRB,...) from all Windows 3.x/'95 .HLP help files and most .MVB multi media viewer titles. Load the resulting RTF file into WinWord to view and print, or modify the topics of the help file and rebuild it using the appropriate help compiler (HC30, HC31, HCP, HCW, HCRTF, WMVC, MMVC, MVC, not included, available at Microsoft). The rebuilt helpfile will not be identical, but should behave like the original, even in respect to inter-HLP-file links. All text, formatting, hypertext links, pictures, macros etc. will be conserved.
HELPDECO.EXE contains 16 and 32 bit versions of the program. It will run as a 16 bit application from MS-DOS command line and as a 32 bit application from Windows 95/NT command line.
HELPDECO can be used to
- recreate lost sources
- print out or view & search all pages of the helpfile
- translate HLP files into another language or file format
- extract parts and bitmaps from a helpfile
- backconvert projects from proprietary authoring systems
- spelunker around in HLP files
- check inter-HLP-file links, entry points
Read included helpdeco.txt for further information.
This archive contains:
- HELPDECO Version 2.1, a Windows 3.x/95 HLP/MVB Decompiler
- Description of the Windows HLP/MVB/ANN/MRB/SHG file formats
- SPLITMRB utility to split MRB->SHG/BMP/WMF and SHG->BMP/WMF
