AUTOMATA

Summary: Visualization of hierarchical planar curves
License: Freeware
Author: Brian DiLoreto
Email: diloreto@planetcable.net
Homepage: http://www.dcblaw.com/automaton/
Download: automata.zip (Mar 5 1999, 86.1K)
Description:
This application is a tool for the visualization of hierarchical planar
curves. A hierarchical planar curve is defined as the path followed by
a stationary point within one planar coordinate system which belongs to
a hierarchy of relatively-moving planar coordinates systems. In a
hierarchy of relatively-moving planar coordinate systems, each system
moves in reference to exactly one other system.

With a series of mouse clicks on various graphical controls, a user can
easily specify an Automaton, or animation of such a hierarchy of moving
coordinate systems.

In addition to the main function of this application mentioned above,
there are two unrelated applets that are part of the application. The
first is a demonstration of the principles involved in phyllotaxis.
Phyllotaxis is a botanical term referring to the arrangement of leaves,
petals, or any other plant part about some axis of the plant, such as
the stem. The applet allows one to see the phyllotaxic arrangement of
plant parts given by a constant angle. One can also see transitions
between such arrangements. The second applet demonstrates the physical
law of differential rotation. Differential rotation refers to the
differing rates of rotation of particles in a swirling medium about the
center of the swirling. The animations created by each of the applets
are determined by several user-definable parameters.

Author: Marvin Small
Email: msmall1@ix.netcom.com
Download: cvepats.zip (Jul 31 2000, 261.3K)
Description:
Cvepats is a Microsoft Excel 5.0 spreadsheet curve generator for up to
200 x, y data input pairs consisting of an independent variable and one
dependent variable. It returns new 'y's, a chart, chitest,
Correlations and Coefficients for Linear, Logarithmic, Exponential, and
Polynomial 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Order Regressions.

I am an Engineer. My work frequently requires greater coefficient
precision than that returned by Excel 5.0's four decimal trendline
generator in their chart program. Statisticians and Engineers with
similar needs for precision solutions may find this program useful.

Cvepats is Freeware. However, to maintain worksheet integrity, all
cells except those required for data input are locked and hidden. This
does not prevent you from copying the individual spreadsheets to your
own Excel workbooks, and chaining input and output to your own work.
The formula cells will still remain locked and hidden.

Eqfit

Summary: Stat tools to fit equations to data
License: Shareware
Author: Lovell's.
Download: eqfit30.zip (Feb 21 2000, 314.8K)
Description:
The best way to summarize a mass of numerical data is to use a simple
equation. To develop that equation, you need graphical and equation
fitting tools. EqFit v3.0 gives you these tools to build and test trial
equations against your data using standard calculation methods from the
Statistics field. The Statistics menu provides two methods to fit
equations to data. Use the Regression Workbench menu to perform
Multiple Linear Regression with up to ten dependent variables. You can
build hundreds of different equations in the Workbench by transforming
individual variables in ten different ways. For example, in Chemistry,
the equation for vapor pressure is well known and can be readily built
in the Workbench. A chemist with vapor pressure vs. temperature data
for a compound can find the equation constants by fitting the data to
the known equation set up in the Workbench.

Use the Simple (XY) Regression menu to perform Simple Linear Regression
to fit equations with only one dependent variable. You can try any of
twelve equations to automatically obtain the best equation fit. You can
monitor the equation fitting progress by using the Graphs menu to plot
any of several variables such as residuals vs. any data column. Use
the Statistics/Regression Reports menu to place the equation fitting
results in the Results window at any time after a calculation. From
this window, you can edit, print, or save the reports to a file.

EqFit receives data by opening a text file, entering data from the
keyboard into a grid, or downloading from the Clipboard into a grid.
The first option is available from the File/Open Data menu and the last
two are available from the File/New Data menu. Select the Edit/Input
Data menu to change, delete, or add to the data currently in EqFit. The
EqFit tools allow you to apply your statistical know how to practical
problems with a minimum of effort. Regression benchmarks that you can
run are included to satisfy quality concerns.

Homepage: http://riceinfo.rice.edu/projects/NonEuclid/
Download: euclid16.zip (Mar 2 1997, 1.7M)
Description:
NonEuclid is a Software Simulation offering Straightedge and Compass Constructions in a Non-Euclidean in geometry called Hyperbolic Geometry (a geometry of Einsteins General Relativity and Curved Hyperspace). NonEuclid is designed for use in High School and Undergraduate Education. NonEuclid also provides a thorough, introductory explanation of Hyperbolic Geometry, with over 25 pages of illustrated hypertext.
Some of the reasons why it is important for high school students to study Hyperbolic Geometry are:
1) Hyperbolic Geometry is becoming increasingly important in its roll
in modern science and technology.
2) A study of Hyperbolic Geometry make clear that geometry is not
something that was completed 3,000 years ago in Greece. Geometry
is a current and active field of research.
3) "Definition" has a precise meaning in geometry that is quite
different from its meaning in common language. Confusion
on this concept is the source of many difficulties students have
in understanding geometric proofs. The strangeness and
counter-intuitiveness of Hyperbolic Geometry helps students to
perceive the subtle, yet critical, differences between
"Definitions" and "Theorems" as they are used in geometry.

Email: jmorton@hylandsoftware.com
Homepage: http://www.hylandsoftware.com/
Download: mlyn106a.zip (Aug 7 1997, 1.7M)
Description:
Merlyn is able to create mathematical expressions that look as if they were in a textbook. There is also the ability to manipulate those equations. If you look at a problem that has been done step by step in a textbook, the difference between one step and the next is that some part of the expression has been rearranged, simplified, canceled, and so on. This is just what Merlyn does. Select the part of the expression you want to change and then apply commands like simplify, cancel, commute, etc., and the expression changes accordingly. If there is more than one possibility you are offered a list of options. Pick the one you want and the result appears in your document. Use Merlyn for algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and the physical sciences. Educators can use Merlyn to create class materials.

Author: Warren Kovach, Kovach Computing Services
Email: WarrenK@kovcomp.com
Homepage: http://www.kovcomp.com/
Download: oria106.zip (Jan 5 2000, 1M)
Description:
Oriana for Windows v1.0 calculates the special forms of sample and
inter-sample statistics required for circular data (e.g. directional
data or time of day). It also graphs your data in a variety of ways,
allowing you to easily demonstrate patterns. Oriana calculates the
circular mean, length of the mean vector, circular standard deviation
and standard error, 95% and 99% confidence limits, and Rayleigh's test
of uniformity for each sample in your data file. Pairs of samples can
be compared with Watson's F-test for two circular means. The overall
distributions of two samples can be compared with Chi-squared tests.
The data for each sample can be summarised with rose diagrams or
circular histograms as well as linear histograms. The individual
observations can be shown in raw data plots. Uniformity plots allow you
to assess whether the data depart from a uniform distribution.
