License: Shareware
Author: Nick Vtyurin, Elcom Ltd.
Email: support@elcomsoft.com
Homepage: http://www.elcomsoft.com/
Download: 3dpaln11.zip (Dec 11 1999, 248.8K)
Description:
This program allows you to compare the 3D structure of proteins (in PDB
format) if you do not have Workstation (as Silicon Graphics) but have a
PC with DOS or Win95/98/NT. Allows you to compare the 3D structure of
proteins. The quality is comparable with the quality of 3D alignment on
Workstation. 3DPAln can determine itself the set of matched amino acids
and the degree of 3D similarity.

The output of 3DPAln is 3D coordinates of second protein rotated and
shifted to the best fitting to the coords of first protein in PDB
format. You can see and manipulate stereo-image of final results using
mirror stereo-glasses. The second output is the linear representation
of 3D alignment and the list of structure conservative regions that fit
to given RMS deviations. The output files are available only in the
registered version of this program.

License: Freeware
Download: ds4seti4.zip (Sep 5 2000, 4.9M)
Description:
This version of Distant Suns 4 is virtually unchanged from the
original, except for the addition of a new menu item: My SETI Target,
located at the top of the File menu. This will show you the part of
the sky which your current SETI data set was taken. Distant Suns will
automatically point you towards your target, highlighting it with a
green diamond. Zoom in, and the actual strip of the sky will come into
view showing you the exact region. Use the "View->Mode->Local" menu
selection to see where your strip currently is in your sky. It will
take a little getting use to, but with some practice you should be able
to proudly point out to your friends and neighbors "your" piece of the
heavens.

ds4seti4.zip has replaced ds4seti5.zip (no functional changes, renamed
because of confusion with Win9x DS4 SE v5).

DNAPROBE

Summary: Oligonucleotide design assistant. Free
License: Freeware
Author: John Stamper and Martin
Download: dnaprobe.zip (Oct 26 1999, 115.9K)
Description:
To isolate genes for new members of a protein family, it is frequently
necessary to design oligonucleotides on the basis of protein alignments.
DNAPROBE assists in the design of oligonucleotides in such cases. It
uses MSF protein alignments generated by the program PILEUP and codon
frequency tables from the Wisconsin (GCG) sequence analysis software
package. The basic algorithm calculates the most probable nucleotide
sequence corresponding to the alignment by summing the products of the
frequency with which a particular amino acid occurs at any one position
and the codon usage frequency for that amino acid. Where an alignment
contains a cluster of closely related sequences, the user may choose to
implement a weighting option that reduces their individual contributions
to the output in order that they do not overwhelm the contributions of
more distantly related sequences which are under-represented. This may
be done in two ways; (a) using the algorithm of Gerstein et al. (J.
Mol. Biol., 236, 1067-1078) and the information contained in the
dendrogram file written by PILEUP, or (b) by specifying weights in a
separate file which is then read by the program, an option which enables
one to give increased weight to sequences known to be more closely
related to the target organism.

DS

Summary: Dynamical system solver (chaos and more). Free
License: Freeware
Author: Juan M. Aguirregabiria
Email: wtpagagj@lg.ehu.es
Homepage: http://tp.lc.ehu.es/jma.html
Download: ds16100.zip (Jan 21 1999, 2.7M)
Description:
Dynamics Solver is intended to solve initial and boundary-value problems
for continuous and discrete dynamical systems:
- Single ordinary differential equations of arbitrary order, including
stiff problems
- Systems of any number of first-order ordinary differential equations
- A rather large class of functional-differential equations and systems
- Iterated maps and recurrences in arbitrary dimensions
- Any problem that can be written in one of the aforementioned forms.

No programming is necessary: everything can be entered in user-friendly
dialog boxes and complex graphics (and numerical) results can be easily
and quickly obtained. The program has a powerful built-in compiler that
automatically translates a large class of mathematical expressions
written in a standard format into an internal code that can be executed
very fast. Apart from the dynamical system solution, one can compute
any quantity involving the solution and its derivatives (for one or more
values of the independent variables), the problem parameters and the
initial conditions. For example, it is possible to draw phase-space
portraits (including an optional direction field), Poincari maps,
Liapunov exponents, cobweb diagrams, histograms and bifurcation
diagrams. The results can be projected (in perspective or not) along
any direction and particular subspaces of the phase space (or the space
of initial conditions) may be analyzed easily.

In minutes you will be able to produce forms consistent with the USDA Forest Service Region 2 Range Analysis Handbook. This product will not only save you time and money, it will also provide you with a fully interactive database which allows you to sort, query and manitpulate data to make it meaningful to the Natural Resource Manager. Enter data in the field, as you monitor the habitat, and the program walks you through to the completed form. Minimal training is needed to make monitoring habitat a snap.
If you need help using a particular technique, EcobaseDB provides a context sensitive help on each prompt, and lists options to assist you on the technical process. When all of the necessary information is input, EcobaseDB will provide a completed form for use in a hardcopy file. The form can also be saved and sent as an electronic file, to a central repository for archiving.
EcobaseDB is the most comprehensive and automated natural resource software package, of its kind, on the market today. Avoid replication of work and increase efficiency by doing work in one step.
Following is a list of techniques addressed in this package. Good luck and happy monitoring with EcobaseDB.
Monitoring Techniques:
- Ocular Utilization Estimates--This technique allows the experienced
habitat manager to quickly assess use and identify concerns in the field.
- Production and Carrying Capacity Determinations.--A technique used
widely for allotment planning.
- Cover Frequency Transects--Assess changes in canopy cover and
frequency of herbaceous species.
- Stubble Height--Primarily valid in riparian habitats, this technique
provides a way of assessing use and condition of this extremely
important habitat.

and ungrazed habitat.
- Utilization Gauge--Allows you to use existing height/weight curves or
make your own.
- Streambank Alteration--Greenline transects which assess streambank
integrity. This technique should be used with stubble-height and
woody browse utilization to determine move dates.
- Production Utilization Summary--Used to determine patterns of use,
utilization and obligation of resources. This is important from
both a planning and day to day management perspective.
- Pellet Group Counts--Assess competition for forage between livestock
and wildlife.
- Rooted Nested Frequency -- Analyze changes in frequency of individual
species over time on a specific site.

Description:
METAR is the name of a code for an aviation weather report. TAF is the name for an airfield forecast. These codes are devised by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a the United Nations organization.
Pilots and meteorologists must learn to read these codes to be able to understand the weather reported, or forecast to occur. Others who also are interested in the aviation weather being transmitted by the codes must learn to translate the elements of the codes into plain language to be able to understand what they mean. METAR & TAF Wizard is a computer program that does this translation for the user. It is suited for use by anyone who wants to read METAR and TAF codes.
The METAR & TAF Wizard is easy to use. The user provides his/her own data by downloading the desired observations in METAR code and/or the desired forecasts in TAF code from the Internet or from other sources. >From the main menu of the METAR & TAF Wizard the user selects whether he/she wants to decode observations (METAR) or forecasts (TAF). After selecting the file that contains the data the user wants to translate, two list boxes appear on the screen, the top one displays the raw (encoded) data (whichever was selected, METAR observations or TAFs). The user clicks on the line he/she wants decoded and the translation is added to the bottom list box. The user can then scroll the list box to read the translations.

Random Sampler 2

Summary: Statistical Analyzer
License: Shareware
Author: Gerald D Otis (Otis Enterprises)
Download: rs152.zip (Apr 14 1997, 2.2M)
Description:
Random Sampler v1.52 <ASP> - Conducts Monte Carlo analyses on continuous data broken down by a categorical variable. Examples are miles per gallon by vehicle manufacturer, change in stock values by rating, frequency of appearance of a type of artifact by geographic location, time to learn a task by type of training. In Salience Analysis, the empirically obtained values for mean, median, mode and variance for a subgroup are compared with values obtained by taking a large number of random samples from the total pool of scores. The probability value obtained indicates the degree to which the empirical sample "stands out" from the total group. In Effect Size Analysis, subgroups are compared by generating samples composed of a randomly drawn case from each subgroup. Auxillary procedures include descriptive statistics, cross- tabulations, breakdown, correlation and regression, generation of random integers, random selection of cases with associated data values, and random selection of values from a variable data set. Graphing capabilities are provided for frequencies, mean, medians, modes, variances and scatter plots. Accomodates dBase, Paradox and text files. New cases and new variables can be added, existing cases or variables can be edited or deleted, and residuals from regression can be added to the database. Random Sampler is a Multiple Document Interface (MDI) application.
